Horse riding and care in the winter has it’s own set of challenges! Coats are longer, weather is colder, and days are shorter. But we do have a few tricks up our sleeves to make the grooming and care process a little bit easier in fall and winter.
Horses get muddy. They get wet in the weather, they roll in mud, their longer coats trap stains and mud and dirt and dust. They also might get some skin infections, have hair loss from rubs, and need some help in the skin health department. Here are some common winter grooming challenges and their solutions!
Challenge: Muddy horse.
Solution: Easy Out.The best way to groom a muddy horse is to wait for the mud to dry. Then, a curry comb and endless dandy brushing can get the vast majority of the mud away. For the last bits of mud and stain, use Easy Out. A few spritzes with a dry towel and stains are a thing of the past.
Challenge: Smelly horse.
Solution: Easy Out. Stains and aromas from manure and urine are easy to clean in winter! Easy Out is a deodorizer and stain remover. Even if your horse isn’t gray or white, Easy Out will remove odors and help your horse shine. It does contain optical brighteners to help even the shaggiest winter coat look great.
Great for stains, mud, and adding shine to dark horses!
Challenge: Blanket rubs.
Solution: M-T-G. Shapley's M-T-G is great for helping skin heal and hair to grow. When you start to notice a blanket rub coming on, time for some M-T-G to encourage hair growth. Blanket rubs are common on the hips, withers, and shoulders. You may notice that your horse’s mane is also affected, in which case you can use a little bit there, too. Be sure to spot test and read the directions.
You can also add Magic Sheen to your grooming routine to prevent blanket rubs. The pure, non drying ingredients create a slippery surface. This allows blankets to slide around, instead of causing rubs.
Challenge: Rain Rot
Solution: M-T-G. The bacteria that make up rain rot are not only contagious to other horses, these bacteria also thrive in a thick winter coat. If you start to notice something unusual with your horse’s hair in the winter, consult your Veterinarian and add M-T-G into your grooming routine. The properties in M-T-G can assist with various skin infections and help the hair grow back.
Scratches - before and after Shapley's M-T-G
Challenge: Scratches, Mud Fever, Dew Poisoning.
Solution: M-T-G. Whatever you call it, scratches can be difficult to treat. Adding M-T-G at the first sign of a scab is a great way to stop the spread and help heal the infection. Be sure to loop your Veterinarian in, and keep the area clean and dry. Spot test and read the directions on M-T-G for best results!
Make clipping a breeze and add some conditioning shine back in!
Solution: No. 1 Light Oil. The key to a stress free and easy clip is starting with a clean horse, clean clipper blades, and some No. 1 Light Oil. This allows the blades to glide through the hair with ease and comfort. Also, the oil prevents the hair from flying everywhere, so you stay relatively hair free!
Challenge: Dull winter coat
Solution: No. 1 Light Oil or No. 2 Heavy Oil. A little bit goes a long way! When you put a bit of oil on a cloth and buff your horse, he’s not only getting shiny, he’s getting conditioned. These grooming oils create a wonderful hair coat and super shine.
Stay ahead of winter grooming challenges with diligent grooming and daily inspections of your horse!
